Directions

From the Miramichi there are two ways to access Big Bald Mountain. The first is to head northwest on the Chaplin Island (CI) Road (Route 430). After 24 kilometers you will drive through Wayerton and cross a bridge over the Northwest Miramichi River. Continue on Route 430 for another 3.6 km and then turn left onto the Fraser Burchill Road. Warning: This is a major forestry road so beware of large truck traffic, especially during weekdays.

Follow this road straight for 20 km to where the road takes a sharp turn to the right. Follow the road for another 21.5 km and turn right at a major junction. After 5.5 km stay left as the road splits. After another 4.6 km turn left onto a smaller road. After 600 meters keep left and the road continues to get smaller. After another 1 km look for the washed out ATV trail on the right. Park here.

Another way to access Big Bald Mountain is from Sunny Corner to the west of Miramichi. From the Irving follow the Northwest Road (across from the Irving) for 2.3 km and turn left onto Back Road. Cross the bridge over the Northwest Miramichi River and at the top of the hill turn right onto Mullin Stream Road. Follow this road for 2.1 km then turn left onto a gravel road. Warning: This is a major forestry road so beware of large truck traffic, especially during weekdays.

Follow this road for 38 km and then keep left when the road splits. Follow the road for another 19 km and turn right onto another main road. After another 1.5 km turn right onto a smaller road. After 600 meters keep left and the road continues to get smaller. After another 1 km look for the washed out ATV trail on the right. Park here.

Description

The Big Bald Mountain Trail starts by climbing an ATV Trail straight up a hill. The trail is washed out with loose rocks but not too steep. After a short distance the trail flattens out and passes a clearing on the right where you will see the first view of Big Bald Mountain Peak. At this point the trees become sparse and the ground is covered with labrador tea and rododendrens. Some dead trees poke up through the knee high scrub brush making it a strange and beautiful landscape.

The main trail passes a small hill that pokes up out of the scrub brush. The rocky top of this hill is covered with granite that is full of holes making it look like giant swiss cheese. From the top of the hill you look directly across at the tower on the peak of Big Bald Mountain, and the braid of several ATV trails that climb the mountain to the peak. The trail climbs down the small hill and rejoins the main trail. Then the trail climbs the main mountain.

The trail is a gravely sand that is washed out in places but again not too steep. Once you reach the peak you will see a small green building attached to a tower. Beside the building is a rocky outcrop with more swiss cheese holes on the top. From the top of the rocky outcrop you can see views of the endless forest in all directions.
