Description

The Miramichi Cross Country Ski Club is in a small village of Nelson that is now part of the City of Miramichi. It uses an old forestry road system as the basis for its ski trails. They also have a set of 6 snowshoe trails that are progressive loops of approximately 1 kilometre each. The snowshoe trails go through the woods between the ski trails. The back loops come back towards the clubhouse so when you are at the mid-point on the sixth loop, you are only 350 metres away from the clubhouse. You can use one of the ski trails to get back if you don't have time to finish the other half of the loops.

The trails start by crossing a small field between the new and old clubhouse. Behind the old clubhouse you will find the start of the blue trail. Signs will tell you to start on the second blue trail. The trails are well marked by colored squares and usually the trail is well packed and easy to follow.

The trail travels through a young mixed forest and passes by some nice spruce and large poplar. There are also some nice, large hemlock throughout. After the first loop it crosses a powerline. You will see rabbit tracks and signs of porcupines. You may even see signs of a moose. The trail is mostly flat except where it goes through a small stream valley on two of the loops (purple and green). The trails are a great place to take a winter walk.
