Deer Park

Oromocto

Map

Description

Deer Park is a nature lovers paradise. The Meadow Trail cuts through the woods behind a ballfield to get to a long, narrow wetland that used to be the Oromocto River. Here you will cross the Duck Trail that travels along the inside of the wetland. You are almost guaranteed to see lots of ducks and herons in the wetland. If you don't see a beaver, you will surely see the signs of beaver activity. I have also seen snakes and Raccoon prints in the mud.

Cross the wetland and you will come to the main River Trail. This trail travels along a narrow strip of land between the wetland and the Oromocto River. The strip of land is dominated by a beautiful stand of floodplain hardwood forest. This trail goes all the way to the Oromocto section of the old railbed trail. With it you can make a look back to your car.

There are also several new trails in the woods to the left of the ballfield. The Poplar Trail loops around a beautiful mixed forest and accesses one of the coves on the wetland. Mountain Bike Trails cross the trail providing many options to explore. The Orchard Trail extends from the Poplar Trail and continues to travel along the wetland.

Oromocto is also close to Fredericton. I go there when I want to experience nature, but don't want to travel too far from the city.

Directions

If you are coming from Fredericton, take exit 301 to Oromocto. At the stop sign turn right onto Black Watch Avenue. After a short distance turn right onto Waasis Road. Drive for 1 kilometre and turn left onto Scoullar Street. Just around the turn, turn left again onto Parkview Avenue. Drive to the end of the street and turn right into the park.

If you are coming from Moncton or Saint John, take exit 303 and then turn left (away from Oromocto). After crossing the overpass, turn right onto Black Watch Avenue. Drive to the end of the road (1.9 km) and turn right onto Waasis Road. Drive for 1 kilometre and turn left onto Scoullar Street. Just around the turn, turn left again onto Parkview Avenue. Drive to the end of the street and turn right into the park.
